Holly-ann’s Travels

I have just returned from a 10 day visit to the Fitzroy Valley, teaching children and mentoring staff in remote indigenous community schools, a very rewarding yet humbling experience.  My previous experience working with children with Special Needs stood me in good stead for the challenges of such a diverse range of learning abilities and I was able to provide the teachers with some effective strategies for equipping their students regardless of age or developmental level.  The feedback from my 2 hour Professional Development and ten-week lesson plan was overwhelmingly positive.

I’d like to thank the children and staff from the Fitzroy Valley schools I had the pleasure of visiting for making me feel so welcome.  I hope the great work we started will inspire you to continue teaching Protective Behaviours.

New Resources

During my time in the Fitzroy Valley I also had the opportunity to refine one of my latest resources which makes up part of our Secrets Package. Tricks, Threats, Lies, Guilt, Bribes, Blackmail and Shame are strategies perpetrators use to stop children from disclosing. This resource gives children a definition for each of these strategies and real life scenarios for them to discuss and identify into which category the scenario fits. I used this resource with children aged ten and over and even though the scenarios can be quite confronting, the feedback I received was that this is a relevant and much needed resource.
